about

"Impossible Worlds is an amalgamation of musical responses to beautiful and painful life experiences. A melancholic traversing of tonal landscapes that resonate deep inside of me, like vague truths."
— Kevin Daniel Cahill

False Walls releases a solo album from Glasgow-born and London-based guitarist Kevin Daniel Cahill. Consisting of two long tracks, the album traces a steady progression as it moves through different environments — initially ambient and isolationist in tone, the work ultimately reaches a form of transcendence. Rooted in Kevin’s guitar-playing, though not immediately identifiable as such due to the deployment of tape loops and effects, the album foregrounds feeling and atmosphere, and its duration and gradual development benefits close listening.

The CD packaging includes work by visual artist Brian McHenry and writer Simon Longman across a 6-panel gatefold sleeve, 8 page CD booklet and CD sleeve. Brian and Simon’s work was developed in response to Kevin’s album, and similarly evokes connections with people, place, landscape and memory.

“The long [33 minute] first piece is astonishing, a mostly timeless drift with an almost non-existent pulse underpinning it, an ebb and flow of echo and sustain. … Trails of notes spiral and fade across an emptiness that is full of overtones and expiring sound. … simply stunning.”
— International Times

“Timeless tonal landscapes create an environment ripe for deep listening on this solo album from Glasgow guitarist Kevin Daniel Cahill. … The two long pieces – ‘Caoineadh’ and ‘Impossible Worlds’ – are equally beautiful, though the title track deserves singling out for Cahill’s ability to chart a drawn-out path that’s both melancholy and transcendent.”
— Electronic Sound

Kevin Daniel Cahill is a classical guitarist from Scotland and graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Folkwang Üniversität Der Künst in Essen, Germany. During his studies, Cahill held a deep connection to romantic and impressionistic works of composers such as Federico Mompou, Toru Takemitsu, Frédéric Chopin and Alexandre Tansman. This began a personal journey for Cahill to try and fuse these contrasting influences and styles within his own personal playing, development and output as a musician through contemporary approaches.

Cahill is an advocate for and performer of 21st century music; he has commissioned several works for the guitar, supporting emerging composers and contributing to growing the diverse repertoire of guitar music. He is an active soloist and has recently given world premiers for newly commissioned music from composers Steve Goss, Laura Snowden, Ninfea Cruttwell Reade, Jay Capperauld and Richard Greer.

His diverse history of musical exploration has lead to collaborations and releases of several projects, such as: Cahill//Costello (Gearbox Records), Graham Costello’s STRATA and noise rock outfit UNITS. His solo releases include Somnium Quies I/II (Fallow Recordings), Future Relics and Dynasties.

Cahill uses his training in the classical arena to merge and fuse contemporary and impressionistic musical languages together through adopted classical techniques and approaches. His music has been described as “Classical guitar meet electric guitar ambiance and multi-instrument art-rock, an audacious synthesis of both worlds” in This is Classical Guitar.

In July 2019 he was featured in the acclaimed music publication Line of Best Fit’s “On the Rise” edition.
